Preparation for Session 3!
Next lesson we will think about human health. It would be very strange if God gave Adam an instruction to work and care for the Garden of Eden and it not be implicit that he should care for his own body. A verse such as Ephesians 5:29: “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church” also just assumes that we’ll look after our bodies. A related subject to health is longevity. The Bible has quite a bit to say on that subject, much of which is surprising, counter-intuitive and simply unbelievable to many people.
About five years ago I wrote a novel to think about how a Christian might approach the goal of living longer and published it on Kindle for Amazon. Here are the first few chapters. I’m not a great writer but I think that these chapters could get you thinking about the subject of longevity and provide a basis for part of our discussion next week. I’m giving you 14 pages, which I imagine will take you about 40 minutes to read. I am also giving you one specific assignment. On page 10 there’s a reference to a red button. I’ve highlighted the relevant section. You have to decide: would you press this button? If so, why? If not, why not? I’ll ask you that question next week! (Just so you know, you have the ‘director’s cut.’ I had deleted the ‘red button’ section from the published version.) With best wishes, Simon.
